"I am happy to inform you of the progress I have made since I attended the RITTC trainers course. When I left the (RITTC) workshop, my action plan was to make sure I organized training sessions and workshops (to) facilitate the dissemination of information using the basic IT tools in the University Medical School. This would be of great importance to the health professionals who need current up to date information in (a) grossly ever changing world."

Ceasar Scott, System Operator, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda

HealthNet Uganda is located in the Medical School of Makerere University and serves a wide array of users, including medical faculty, doctors, researchers, students, and other health workers. There are currently about 60 sites connected to HealthNet, including the Mulago Hospital, which is the main referral and teaching hospital in Uganda. In 1999, SATELLIFE transitioned HealthNet Uganda to a local Internet Service Provider (ISP) and continued providing its full suite of information services to the network's user community.

Shortly after his participation in the RITTC Training of Trainers program, Ceasar Scott of HealthNet Uganda wrote to SATELLIFE about how he could apply his new skills to Uganda's new training program at the University Medical School. As a result, HealthNet Uganda has trained nearly 100 medical personnel in basic Internet tools. The training is being set up along the model of the RITTC in Nairobi and staff from HealthNet Uganda is using the training manuals developed by SATELLIFE for instruction.

Another exciting development, revealed in an announcement from the World Health Organization (WHO), is that HealthNet Uganda has been invited to collaborate with the WHO's Health InterNetwork at Makerere University, a pilot site for the project. HealthNet Uganda is expected to play a key role in training and networking. The Health InterNetwork is a collaboration of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) to connect medical and research centers in the developing world to each other and to information resources.
