Today, AED-SATELLIFE makes its health information resources available to all
health professionals in the developing world, regardless of whether or not
they obtain their e-mail connection through HealthNet. So, the meaning of
"HealthNet" has come to encompass AED-SATELLFE's information
resources, as well as the e-mail technology. With over 10,000 members
worldwide, HealthNet is ultimately not just about technology or content, but
about a network of people working together to build healthier communities.
HealthNet Partners Around the World
Since its inception, AED-SATELLIFE has worked with ministries of health,
medical schools, medical libraries, and other health facilities to build
locally owned and managed HealthNet networks. Each HealthNet has evolved
according to local needs. In some instances, HealthNet serves a single
institution; in others, it extends throughout a region or country to serve
a much larger community. In all cases, they are designated by the country in
which they are located, such as HealthNet Ethiopia or HealthNet Nepal.
The services provided by our HealthNet partners vary as well. All of them
provide free or low-cost email and access to HealthNet Information Services,
but they may also provide locally generated information resources, information
technology (IT) training, electronic conferences, and Web-based services such
as Web telephone and Web site hosting.
AED-SATELLIFE supports our HealthNet partners by providing hardware and
software, technical training for systems operators, technical support, and
consulting on program development and business planning. Over the years,
AED-SATELLIFE and its HealthNet partners have employed a variety of technologies
to provide affordable information and communication services to HealthNet
members. This use of multiple technologies has allowed the HealthNet network
to grow and expand, keeping apace of evolving telecommunications infrastructures
and users' expanding needs.
